Oscar Smith High School celebrated significant achievements this week as senior wide receiver Travis Johnson was named the VHSL state Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year, while head coach Chris Scott received the Coach of the Year honor. These accolades follow the Tigers’ impressive performance in the state championship, marking their second consecutive title and the fourth during Scott’s tenure.
Johnson, who has committed to play for Michigan, had a standout season, recording 56 receptions for an impressive 1,157 yards and 15 touchdowns. This recognition adds to his accolades as he secures a spot on the all-state team for the second year in a row. Johnson was joined on the first team by seven of his teammates, including junior quarterback Lonnie Andrews, senior offensive lineman Dory Wilson, and senior linebacker Malachi White, among others.
The second team featured senior tight end Charles McGlown and Jarvis, who also made the team as a linebacker. Under Scott’s leadership, the team demonstrated remarkable skill and teamwork, culminating in a decisive 33-20 victory over Indian River at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, on September 20, 2025.
Old Dominion Football Update
In other sports news, the Old Dominion Monarchs are navigating changes as starting tight end Jailen Butler plans to enter the transfer portal. Butler, standing at 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, has made 21 starts with 18 career catches totaling 103 yards and one touchdown. He joins teammates quarterback Colton Joseph and running back Trequan Jones in seeking new opportunities.
On a positive note, the Monarchs secured a commitment from running back Hunter Patterson, who will transfer from Division II West Liberty. During his time there, Patterson rushed for 1,219 yards and 17 touchdowns on 174 carries, while also catching 33 passes for 418 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing his potential to contribute to Old Dominion’s offense.
Scholar All-Region Recognition in Women’s Soccer
In collegiate women’s soccer, Christopher Newport University celebrated the recognition of two players as Scholar All-Region selections. Senior midfielder Hanna Heaton and junior goalkeeper Amy Sidaway were honored for their excellence both on the field and in academics, earning Scholar All-South Region honors.
Heaton, who has been selected to the first team, is a repeat honoree, while this recognition extends a program-record streak to eight consecutive years with at least one athlete acknowledged for academic and athletic achievements. To qualify for this prestigious accolade, players must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.40 while participating in a minimum of 75% of their games.
These accomplishments highlight the dedication and talent present in high school and collegiate athletics, showcasing both individual excellence and team success across various sports.
