URGENT UPDATE: Police officers in Queens shot and killed a man early this morning after he allegedly charged at them with a box cutter. The incident occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. on December 21, at 1170 Nameoke St. in Far Rockaway, following a 911 call about a domestic dispute.

According to NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, officers from the 101st Precinct responded to a report involving a father and son. Upon their arrival, they met with the father and mother and entered the apartment to locate the 29-year-old son, who was not immediately found. As the officers were exiting the apartment, they encountered the son in the hallway, armed with a box cutter.

Chief Rivera stated, “The officers gave multiple verbal commands to the male to drop the weapon as they attempted to deescalate the situation. The male did not comply.” The father retreated behind the officers as the son charged at them with the weapon.

In a split-second decision, one officer deployed a Taser while a second officer fired their weapon, striking the man. Despite immediate attempts at CPR, the suspect was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities confirmed that the responding officers were evaluated at a local hospital for any potential injuries but were ultimately unharmed. Chief Rivera emphasized the dangers officers face, stating, “This incident once again demonstrates the dangers that our police officers face every day and how a routine call can quickly escalate into an extremely dangerous situation.”

The incident is currently under investigation by the NYPD Force Investigation Division, as officials work to understand the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
