UPDATE: In a commanding performance, Monsignor Farrell High School’s boys’ basketball team overwhelmed St. Edmund’s with a powerful second-half surge, clinching a 56-35 victory on Tuesday night in Oakwood, Staten Island. The Lions, who overcame a tight halftime deficit, showcased an impressive blend of defense and offense that left fans in awe.
The game shifted dramatically after halftime as Farrell, trailing by just two points at the break, unleashed a dominant defensive strategy, limiting St. Edmund’s to only 11 points in the second half. Junior Michael Abreu led the charge with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, senior JJ Yates sparked the offense with a trio of three-pointers in the pivotal third quarter, finishing with 14 points.
Head coach Danny Fisher emphasized the importance of defensive pressure. “In the second half, we adjusted a little bit with token full-court pressure,” Fisher said. “We were more physical and got in the passing lanes, and it obviously played in our favor.” This strategic shift allowed Farrell to take control of the game, turning a potential nail-biter into a comfortable victory.
The Eagles, led by junior Tristian Lewis with 10 points, initially found success with their methodical offense, leading 24-22 at halftime. However, the tide turned midway through the third quarter. With the game tied at 28-28, Yates ignited the Lions with consecutive three-pointers, propelling his team to a decisive lead of 39-31 heading into the final period.
“We pushed the ball more in the second half and played at a higher speed,” Yates commented. “When I hit a few shots, it boosted my confidence, and I could feel my teammates looking for me.” His performance was crucial in establishing momentum that the Lions maintained throughout the fourth quarter.
As the game progressed, Farrell’s defense intensified, executing a game-clinching 10-2 run that extended their lead to 49-33. Abreu and teammate Matt Scalisi, who added 12 points, drove the scoring surge, showcasing the Lions’ offensive depth.
The Lions not only dominated on offense but also controlled the boards, winning the rebounding battle 30-24 and committing just eight turnovers compared to St. Edmund’s 13. This efficiency was pivotal in maintaining their lead and securing the victory.
Looking ahead, Farrell’s next game is scheduled for Monday, when they will compete in a holiday tournament in Daytona, Florida, aiming to extend their winning streak to six games. With their record now standing at 5-4 overall and 4-4 in league play, the Lions are poised for a strong finish to the season.
This impressive victory not only boosts Farrell’s confidence but also highlights their potential as a formidable contender in the CHSAA A Division. As fans celebrate this crucial win, the Lions will look to maintain their momentum in the upcoming tournament.
