Gophers’ Drake Lindsey Shines Ahead of Rate Bowl Showdown

PHOENIX — The Gophers’ offensive coordinator, Greg Harbaugh, has highlighted standout performances from quarterback Drake Lindsey as the team prepares for the Rate Bowl against New Mexico. Lindsey, a redshirt freshman, has completed 63% of his passes this season, amassing 2,235 yards, with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. His impressive statistics place him among the top ten single-season records in Gophers history.

Kickoff for the Rate Bowl is set for 3:30 p.m. CT on Friday, giving Lindsey the opportunity to enhance his already notable achievements. Harbaugh expressed his ambition for Lindsey to evoke fear in opposing defenses. “That’s what our goal is,” he said, emphasizing the importance of confidence and performance.

Highlighting Key Plays from the Season

Reflecting on the season, Harbaugh shared one of his favorite plays from Lindsey during a thrilling 31-28 victory over Rutgers on September 27. In that game, Lindsey executed a guard-pull play-action pass, connecting with tight end Jameson Geers as the first read. Unexpectedly, he also spotted receiver Le’Meke Brockington, who was not initially part of the play’s progression. “I can tell you how many times I said to Drake to throw the post on that: Zero,” Harbaugh remarked. Lindsey’s instinctive decision led to a crucial 9-yard touchdown that tied the game.

Lindsey’s ability to read the field and adapt was evident again when he launched a 78-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Smith, marking the Gophers’ longest pass play of the season. Harbaugh noted this moment as pivotal in the team’s comeback from a 14-point deficit.

Another key moment occurred during the 23-20 overtime win against Michigan State on November 1. Lindsey made a critical third-down conversion to Brockington, showcasing his precision. Harbaugh praised the throw, stating, “It’s a ridiculous throw; like, you can’t teach it.”

Lindsey’s performance has not been without challenges. He acknowledged a disappointing game against Iowa on October 25, where he threw three interceptions in a 41-3 loss. “There’s a few throws that you know you always want again,” he said, reflecting on the lessons learned from that experience.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Gophers Football

As Lindsey prepares for the Rate Bowl, he remains focused on his growth. Former Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan highlighted Lindsey’s potential, noting his impressive arm talent early in the season during a win against Buffalo on August 28. “You saw his arm talent and just natural ability to throw the football pop,” Morgan stated.

Harbaugh continues to emphasize the importance of building trust in Lindsey’s abilities as he transitions into his sophomore year. “You want to continue to build off of it. You want to continue to let him know, ‘OK, you can make any throw,’” Harbaugh explained.

Lindsey’s dual-threat capability was also on display in his rushing efforts, with four rushing touchdowns this season. He humorously remarked on his limited running attempts, suggesting he could improve in that area next year. A memorable moment came during a game against Michigan State, where a decisive stiff-arm move allowed him to secure a touchdown and clinch the victory.

Heading into the Rate Bowl, both Lindsey and Harbaugh are optimistic about what lies ahead. With Lindsey’s impressive statistics and growth as a player, the Gophers are poised to make a significant impact in their upcoming matchup.
