As the festive season approaches, many families in Houston are feeling the financial strain. The 47th annual City Wide Club Super Feast provided much-needed assistance to hundreds this week, offering food, clothing, toys, and essential services. This year’s event, held at a packed convention center, highlighted the increasing demand for support amid ongoing economic challenges.
Organizers noted that the need for assistance is greater than ever, with many families struggling to make ends meet due to rising costs. According to Caitlyn Goins, a representative from City Wide Club, widespread job losses, cuts to government benefits, and inflation have compounded the difficulties families face.
For single mother Brittany Simpson, attending the Super Feast was timely. Simpson, who works part-time in security, explained that despite her efforts to pay the bills, she has been unable to set aside any money for Christmas presents. “Every dollar goes to necessities,” she stated. “Diapers, wipes, rent — I haven’t been able to buy a single toy for my daughter.”
The Super Feast not only provided tangible support but also a sense of community for participants like Simpson. She expressed her gratitude, saying, “Super Feast and similar community events have been a blessing for my family.” The event offered more than just food; it included toy donations and family services such as career and medical assistance.
Community Response and Future Commitment
Goins emphasized that stories like Simpson’s are increasingly common, reflecting a broader trend of families struggling to balance work and financial responsibilities. “It’s been tough on everyone,” she remarked. “So, this event is stepping up where we need to.”
The Super Feast featured food baskets, clothing, and recreational activities for children, including a bounce house. Organizers have committed to serving families until the last person is fed. After the event concludes, planning for next year’s Super Feast will begin, with the goal of continuing to provide vital support during the holiday season.
Simpson’s experience at the Super Feast offered her hope as she looks ahead. “2025 has been a crazy year for me,” she shared. “Now I’m going into the new year with some blessings, and I’m just going to keep putting my best foot forward.”
The Super Feast serves as a testament to the resilience of the Houston community, meeting families where they are and providing essential relief during challenging times.
