A remarkable transformation has taken place in a sprawling home near Houston, Texas, where designer Meg Lonergan has infused English countryside charm into a substantial residence. The project, commissioned by Brook Novelli, aims to create a welcoming retreat for family gatherings, blending cozy aesthetics with expansive Texas space.
Lonergan’s design philosophy draws heavily from the intimate feel of English country homes. “I love the welcoming, cottagey feel,” she explains, emphasizing her desire to bring that atmosphere into the 8,000 square feet of the Novelli residence. With a focus on family, Brook and her husband Mike sought to reinvent their home instead of downsizing, ensuring it would accommodate their adult children and growing families.
The Novelli family’s rich background in interior design significantly influenced the project. Brook’s mother was an interior designer, instilling in her a profound appreciation for antiques, textiles, and art. This familiarity with design led Brook to carefully select Lonergan from numerous candidates, ultimately drawn to her layered and soulful approach.
As the project unfolded, the home’s layout required significant adjustments. The original open-plan design, established in 2000, did not align with the new vision. Architect Matthew Mitchell was brought in to introduce structural details that would create a more defined living space. Key changes included the addition of columns and a reconfiguration of the kitchen, fostering a more convivial atmosphere suitable for larger gatherings.
The kitchen, a central hub of the home, was transformed with wood-stained cabinetry to enhance contrast and balance. A long center island now serves as a casual dining area, with high stools providing a relaxed setting for family breakfasts. The design choices reflected both the Texan and English influences that characterize the home.
Lonergan’s persuasive approach extended to reimagining the library, previously a playroom. Despite Brook’s initial hesitations, the library became a cherished space, highlighting the importance of flexibility in design. Similarly, the main bathroom underwent a significant upgrade, shedding its outdated features for a more luxurious experience.
Throughout the home, a cohesive palette of earthy greens and browns draws inspiration from the surrounding woodland. Lonergan skillfully merged traditional Texan design elements with English aesthetics, evident in the dining room. Here, hand-printed wallpaper from de Gournay envelops the walls, complemented by a mixture of Brook’s existing furniture and newly sourced pieces.
Brook’s commitment to sustainability was apparent in the project’s execution. Many existing items were reupholstered or refurbished, a testament to the idea that preserving quality pieces can enhance a home’s character. “Why fix what’s not broken?” Lonergan notes, highlighting the fun in piecing together the interior puzzle.
The successful collaboration between Lonergan, Brook, and Mitchell has resulted in a home that seamlessly integrates both Texan and English influences. The final outcome not only meets the needs of the Novelli family but also captures the essence of both cultures, making it a welcoming space for afternoon tea or family gatherings.
