The Ironton Fighting Tigers triumphed over the Chesapeake Panthers with a final score of 49-45 on December 19, 2023. This victory marked a significant achievement for the Fighting Tigers, as they remained undefeated in their season, improving their record to 5-0 and placing them in a tie for the early lead in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) standings.
Playing at Ironton High School’s Conley Center, the Fighting Tigers showcased a balanced approach, effectively blending defense and offense. They quickly established control of the game, taking a 10-2 lead after an initial 2-0 deficit and never trailing again. The turning point came in the third quarter, where Ironton outscored Chesapeake 11-2. The Panthers struggled during this period, failing to convert on 14 attempts and experiencing a scoring drought that lasted over nine minutes.
Ironton extended their lead to 43-32 by the end of the third quarter. Although Chesapeake managed to narrow the gap to 47-45 with their first three-pointer of the game, they could not reclaim the lead. In the final moments, Maddix Markel sealed the victory for the Fighting Tigers by sinking three out of four free throws.
As a result of this win, Ironton shares the top spot in the OVC with the defending champion Fairland Dragons, both teams holding a 2-0 record in conference play. The upcoming matchup against Fairland on December 23, 2023, promises to be crucial, as the winner will take sole possession of first place.
This game carried additional significance for Ironton, as they had previously lost to Chesapeake in overtime during the last season. Head coach Drew Stevens emphasized the importance of this victory. He stated, “Just because we won tonight, we’re still chasing to get where they (Panthers) are.” He acknowledged Chesapeake’s strong performance last season and noted their potential to remain a formidable opponent.
The Fighting Tigers demonstrated their offensive prowess throughout the game. Ashton Layne led Ironton with 15 points and an impressive 19 rebounds, while Brycen Mullins contributed 13 points with three successful three-pointers. Layne’s performance, including a critical four-point play, showcased his ability to elevate the team at key moments.
Chesapeake, now with a 4-1 record, was led by Maddox Kazee, who scored 14 points, and Kaden Perkins, who added 11. Despite the defeat, the Panthers displayed resilience and fought until the final buzzer.
Stevens highlighted the defensive efforts of his team, particularly in limiting Chesapeake’s second-chance opportunities. He acknowledged the challenge posed by Chesapeake’s experience and skill, stating, “They are still a great basketball team, regardless of tonight.”
The Fighting Tigers will face another significant challenge when they travel to Fairland for their next game. Stevens expressed pride in his team’s commitment to defensive play, stating, “Effort doesn’t require a lot. We don’t have to hit shots in order to play defense.”
With the holiday season approaching, the Ironton Fighting Tigers look to maintain their momentum and solidify their position in the OVC standings. As they prepare for their next game, the focus remains on continuing their strong performance and overcoming the challenges that lie ahead.
