James Gordon Sheehy, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and Navy veteran, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 84. Surrounded by family, Jim, as he was affectionately known, spent his final moments in Redondo Beach, California, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and adventure.

Born on March 9, 1941, in Windsor, New York, Jim was the son of James Edward Sheehy and Shirley Baldwin Sheehy. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Alexis, their children, James and Shannon, his grandson, Matthew, and his brother, Dennis. Jim was preceded in death by siblings Terry, Paul, Annine, Brian, Susan, and Burchard.

A Life of Service and Achievement

Jim’s commitment to service began with his enlistment in the United States Navy, where he served from 1960 to 1966 and achieved the rank of E-6 as a Fire Control Technician. During his tenure, he served on several vessels, including the USS Lawrence, USS Chicago, USS Ramsey, USS Columbus, and USS Talbot. His military experience instilled in him a profound sense of discipline and pride.

Following his naval service, Jim transitioned into a successful career as an aerospace engineer. He made significant contributions to major projects at notable organizations such as Burroughs Corporation, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Honeywell, and Northrop. His work on the Viking Mars spacecraft and the MX ICBM Missile programs earned him recognition for his technical expertise.

In addition to his professional achievements, Jim was an active member of Rotary International for sixteen years, embodying the organization’s values of service and community. He also embraced the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous, celebrating 38 years of continuous sobriety in September 2025. His commitment to recovery and service resonated deeply within the fellowship, illustrating his dedication to living a meaningful life.

A Passion for Travel and Adventure

Jim’s adventurous spirit led him to explore the world alongside his wife, Alexis. Together, they visited all seven continents, traveling to 103 countries and more than 500 cities. His enthusiasm for learning about diverse cultures enriched his life and that of those around him.

Despite facing challenges due to a serious back condition diagnosed in 2012, Jim refused to let it hinder his zest for life. He adapted by using a walker, which allowed him to stay engaged with his passions, including travel. In an inspiring feat, he completed the 2015 Los Angeles Marathon using a “sport walker,” subsequently finishing another five marathons.

Jim Sheehy will be remembered for his intelligence, resilience, and generosity of spirit. His legacy is one of a life fully lived, marked by travels, service, and an unwavering love for his family. He leaves behind a profound impact on all who knew him and will be deeply missed.
