UPDATE: The United Way of Denton County is set to honor local philanthropists David and Carol Rowley with the prestigious Dr. Bettye Myers Humanitarian Award during the 14th annual United Tribute gala on January 17, 2025. This recognition celebrates their unwavering commitment to community support through over six decades of consistent donations and volunteering.
The Rowleys’ charitable journey began in 1963 when David, then an engineer for Southwestern Bell in Houston, initiated his contributions through payroll deductions. Two years later, Carol joined in, donating from her teaching salary. “I remember thinking, ‘I hope this small amount can help someone,’” Carol reflected on her early contributions.
Despite numerous relocations across Texas and the U.S. due to David’s telecommunications career, the couple’s dedication to United Way never faltered. After David retired in 1993, they made a remarkable decision. Learning that United Way Dallas fell short of its fundraising goals, they calculated their potential contributions and sent a check to the nonprofit for that amount, continuing their support as independent donors.
Since moving to Denton in late 1997, the Rowleys have generously donated over $108,000 and have consistently contributed at the Leadership level, which requires donations of at least $1,000 annually. Their financial support has significantly impacted local nonprofits and programs through United Way of Denton County.
Alongside their financial generosity, the Rowleys have actively volunteered with various programs, witnessing firsthand the transformative power of United Way. “When something horrible happens, people swarm to it. That’s human nature,” Carol said. “United Way represents something else: a hope to congregate together enough resources to make a difference in local people’s lives.”
The Dr. Bettye Myers Humanitarian Award was established in 2012 to honor individuals demonstrating exemplary community leadership and philanthropy. The upcoming gala will celebrate these essential contributions to the Denton community.
Tickets for the United Tribute Gala on January 17 are available for purchase online, providing a chance for the community to come together in recognition of the Rowleys’ remarkable legacy.
This event serves not just as a celebration but as a reminder of the profound impact that long-term commitment to community service can make. Stay tuned for more updates on this inspiring story as it unfolds.
