Nathan Richardson’s Historic Workshop in Hampton: Don’t Miss Out!

UPDATE: Renowned historical interpreter Nathan Richardson will bring his remarkable portrayal of Frederick Douglass to Hampton, Virginia, next week. His workshop, “The Art of Historical Interpretation,” is set for October 30, 2023, at 6:30 PM at the Hampton History Museum. This event promises to be an engaging exploration of the vital role historical interpreters play in education and storytelling.

Richardson, who performs approximately 65 shows a year, transforms into Douglass, the legendary abolitionist, sharing insights and stories that resonate with audiences of all ages. He will explain the difference between an interpreter and a reenactor, emphasizing that “an interpreter literally has to become that person.” Attendees can expect a unique experience where they not only witness history but can also engage directly with Douglass through a Q&A session.

“An interpreter has to know everything from the greatest achievements to the tiniest details,” Richardson stated. His performances often begin with powerful reenactments of Douglass’s speeches, followed by an interactive segment where the audience can ask questions directly to him in character.

Richardson, a 22-year Army veteran, began his journey as a historical interpreter in 2012. He aims to pass on his knowledge to the next generation of interpreters, hoping to inspire young people to embrace history and storytelling. “We need new people,” he urged. “Younger individuals interested in history can bring it to life for future audiences.”

Attendees will also learn about Douglass’s remarkable life—from his escape from slavery in 1838 to his influential role in the abolitionist movement and friendship with President Lincoln. Richardson believes that Douglass’s story is essential because it lays the groundwork for understanding modern civil rights.
