Zelensky Claims Peace Deal Near Completion Amid Ongoing Attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a poignant New Year’s address expressing hope for peace while acknowledging the ongoing conflict with Russia. His remarks came just hours after Russia launched an assault involving more than 200 drones targeting various locations in Ukraine, resulting in at least two fatalities. Zelensky’s speech highlighted the stark contrast between his aspirations for peace and the grim reality facing his nation.

In his address, Zelensky reflected on the painful passage of time since the Russian invasion began, stating, “I would give anything in the world if, in this address, I could say that peace will also come in just a few minutes.” As the clock approached midnight on December 31, 2024, he lamented, “Unfortunately, I cannot say that yet.” Despite the challenges, he asserted that Ukraine is making every effort to achieve peace, noting that a US-backed peace deal is “90% ready.”

Zelensky pointed out that the remaining 10% of the negotiations hinges on Russia’s stringent demands and its reluctance to make meaningful concessions. He emphasized the critical nature of these final details, stating, “Ten percent to save millions of lives. Ten percent of the determination needed for peace to work 100%.” His call for unity among Ukrainians, Americans, Europeans, and the global community underscored the collaborative effort required to finalize the agreement.

Following his address, Zelensky spoke with Steve Witkoff, special envoy for former President Donald Trump, to discuss strategies for advancing the peace talks. Witkoff later shared on social media that the discussions focused on enhancing security guarantees and creating effective mechanisms to prevent the war from reigniting.

As diplomatic efforts continued, Russia marked the New Year with a drone attack that saw Ukrainian air defenses intercept 176 drones. The Ukrainian military reported that 24 of these drones successfully struck 15 locations across the country. In addition to the immediate casualties, the assault serves as a reminder of the persistent threat faced by Ukraine.

Moscow also reiterated its allegations that Ukraine attempted to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin during a drone strike in December. Ukraine has denied these claims, and reports suggest that US intelligence agencies, including the CIA, have deemed the accusations unfounded.

Zelensky’s New Year’s address encapsulated the duality of hope and hardship that defines Ukraine’s current situation. As the nation seeks a peaceful resolution, the road ahead remains fraught with challenges, underscoring the urgent need for collaborative international efforts to bring about an enduring peace in the region.
