Holiday Train Show Opens at NYBG Featuring Mini Brooklyn Bridge

UPDATE: The Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) has officially opened, showcasing a stunning miniature replica of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. The exhibition runs through January 11, 2024, and features nearly 200 plant-based recreations of famous New York landmarks.

During a guided tour, Kenia Pittman, director of exhibition design operations, highlighted the significance of the miniature Brooklyn Bridge, which has been part of the collection since 2004. Pittman explained, “The Brooklyn Bridge is the largest bridge in the Holiday Train Show.” This captivating display is crafted from natural materials, including oak, elm, and willow twigs, designed to resemble stone.

The real Brooklyn Bridge, which opened on May 24, 1884, spans the East River and remains a symbol of New York City. The NYBG’s miniature version captures its essence and adds a unique twist with its intricate construction.

The Holiday Train Show debuted 34 years ago and has evolved into a beloved seasonal attraction, featuring over 30 G-scale model locomotives and trolleys that wind through a miniature New York City made from natural materials. The exhibit is not just about the trains; the scenic elements often leave visitors in awe.

Applied Imagination, a company based in Alexandria, Kentucky, is responsible for the stunning miniatures. Using materials sourced from local woods, the artisans craft replicas that reflect the beauty of New York’s architecture. Pittman noted, “They use leaves, seeds, twigs, bark, and acorns to create these unique and beautiful pieces.”

Some highlights include structures from Brooklyn like the Coney Island Luna Park Arch, featuring vibrant canella berry bulbs, and the Williamsburg Art and Historical Society, made from pinecone scales and birch bark.

Each season, the exhibit introduces new additions to keep the experience fresh. This year, visitors can admire miniatures of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the recently renovated Delacorte Theater, showcasing intricate designs crafted from various natural materials.

NEW THIS YEAR: The exhibition includes special activities, such as a sensory-friendly morning on January 3 from 9 to 11 a.m., and a Holiday Train Show After Dark event on January 10. Tickets are available starting at $25 through the NYBG website.

The Holiday Train Show is more than just an exhibit; it’s a celebration of creativity and community. Pittman encourages visitors to explore their own creativity: “Head out to your local trails or city parks and gather a few natural materials. There’s no wrong way to create your own take on a favorite New York City landmark.”
