Search Underway for Two Missing Persons off Withernsea Coast

A search operation is currently underway for two individuals believed to be missing off the coast of Withernsea in the East Riding of Yorkshire. According to HM Coastguard, emergency services were alerted just after 15:00 GMT on January 1, 2024, prompting a significant response amid challenging weather conditions.

The search effort involves multiple agencies, including ambulances, helicopters, and a fixed-wing aircraft, all deployed to navigate the “horrendous conditions.” Reports indicate that waves have reached heights of up to 9.8 feet during the day, further complicating rescue efforts.

In a statement, Humberside Police confirmed the recovery of an unconscious man from the water during initial searches. Despite the immediate efforts to revive him, the 67-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities noted that the circumstances surrounding his death are not suspected to be suspicious.

Continued Search Efforts and Local Concerns

As the search for the remaining individuals continues, residents can expect an increased police presence in and around the area. Local photographer Darrin Stevens, who lives just 250 meters from the coast, expressed his concern over the harsh weather conditions. He described the experience as “bitter and freezing,” emphasizing the dangers posed by the turbulent sea.

Stevens observed the emergency services operating dangerously close to the shoreline, remarking, “The sea could have been very dangerous, the water is very bitter, and if they are in that water, they do not have long.” He stressed the importance of caution in such treacherous conditions, noting, “Every care needs to be taken; you need to be at your wisest.”

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has issued warnings regarding the risks associated with cold water shock, especially in light of the current weather. Gareth Morrison, the head of water safety for the RNLI, stated, “We urge anyone entering the water to be aware of the dangers, check sea conditions carefully, and understand their own limitations.”

The RNLI highlighted that water temperatures around the UK and Ireland are currently between 6°C and 10°C, increasing the risk for individuals participating in winter swimming or festive dips.

Recent Tragedies Highlight Risks

The ongoing operation in Yorkshire follows a tragic incident on New Year’s Day, when a 51-year-old man lost his life in the sea off Brighton. Sussex Police received an alert at 10:35 GMT after the swimmer, identified as being from Kettering, Northamptonshire, was recovered from the water near the Brighton Palace Pier.

As the search for the two missing persons continues, authorities remain vigilant in addressing the dangers posed by the unpredictable sea and inclement weather. The community is urged to stay informed and exercise caution in coastal areas during this challenging season.
