The Chico State men’s and women’s basketball teams delivered dramatic performances on January 5, 2024, securing narrow victories over Cal State Los Angeles at Acker Gym in Chico. The women’s team triumphed 60-57, while the men’s team edged out their opponents 70-69.
The women’s basketball team improved its record to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) following their hard-fought win. After trailing 9-2 in the early minutes, the Wildcats rallied, taking a 13-12 lead with 2:57 left in the first quarter. They maintained the lead until midway through the third quarter, but entered the final period down 53-46.
Chico State dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Cal State Los Angeles 14-4 to clinch the victory. Madison Parry was a standout player, contributing 21 points and 12 rebounds. Nseije Ortiz added 12 points, while Meadow Aragon recorded nine points and 12 rebounds. The Wildcats exhibited strong rebounding, finishing the game with a 45-30 advantage over their opponents.
The Wildcats will next compete at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills on January 6, 2024, at 1 p.m.
In the men’s game, Chico State also showcased resilience with a thrilling comeback. Trailing 45-38 at halftime, the Wildcats rallied in the second half to secure a 70-69 victory. Jeremiah Dargan was instrumental in the win, scoring 23 points, including a vital layup with just nine seconds remaining on the clock.
Other key contributors included Chris Holley, who finished the game with 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists, and Cortevious Taylor, who added 11 points and 11 rebounds. This victory improved the men’s record to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in CCAA play.
Chico State’s men’s team will also face Cal State Dominguez Hills on January 6, 2024, at 3 p.m. Both teams are looking to build on their momentum following these thrilling contests.
