URGENT UPDATE: Thousands of mourners are gathering today to pay their final respects to fallen Delaware State Police Corporal Matthew “Ty” Snook at the University of Delaware. The Celebration of Life services are set to take place at the Bob Carpenter Center from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., following a public viewing earlier today from 9 a.m. to noon.
The atmosphere is heavy as law enforcement officers and first responders prepared for a somber procession that began at Christiana Mall this morning. The southbound lanes on I-95 were briefly closed at 6:30 a.m. to accommodate the procession, leading to the university. Authorities expect significant traffic delays, estimating over 3,000 additional cars in the area as the community comes together to honor Snook.
Cpl. Snook tragically lost his life on December 23, 2022, while working overtime at a DMV in Minquadale, Delaware. According to investigators, after being shot, Snook heroically pushed an employee out of harm’s way, urging others to flee as the assailant shot him again. His bravery in the face of danger has deeply impacted the local community.
As a dedicated member of the Delaware State Police for a decade, Snook leaves behind a wife and a one-year-old daughter. The ceremony will culminate in a 21-gun salute and a flyover, symbolizing the profound respect and admiration for his service.
In light of the procession and expected traffic disruptions, all 13,000 students in the Christina School District are participating in virtual learning today to minimize congestion near the bus depot.
While the public gathers to honor Snook’s sacrifice, the impact of his loss resonates throughout the community. Mourners are encouraged to share their condolences and support for the Snook family during this difficult time.
As the community comes together to celebrate the life of Corporal Matthew “Ty” Snook, his legacy of courage and selflessness will not be forgotten.
