UPDATE: First Lady Cecilia Abbott has urgently called upon Texans to unite against human trafficking as the Governor’s Response Against Child Exploitation (GRACE) initiative kicks off its sixth annual Week of Prayer to End Human Trafficking from January 5 through January 11, 2025. This interfaith event coincides with Human Trafficking Prevention Month and aims to galvanize the faith-based community in a collective action to combat exploitation.
The First Lady emphasized the power of community in her announcement, stating, “Nothing is stronger than Texans standing together through prayer and action.” Abbott urged all Texans to dedicate moments of their week “to join GRACE in its efforts to protect the vulnerable and stand against exploitation.” This initiative seeks not only to raise awareness but to actively disrupt the cycle of trafficking and support survivors.
Each day of the Week of Prayer will feature specific intentions focused on vital issues such as exposing exploiters, raising community awareness, and promoting healing for survivors. Participants are encouraged to reflect on daily themes that emphasize both legal and emotional support for human trafficking victims.
Texas officials, including Audrey O’Neill, Commissioner of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), and Blanca Lance, DFPS Director of Human Trafficking, have joined Abbott in urging community participation. They announced the release of the 2026 Human Trafficking Prevention and Awareness Month guide, which includes educational resources aimed at empowering Texans in this critical fight.
As the week progresses, officials hope that the collective efforts of prayer and community engagement will comfort those affected while also fostering systemic change. This initiative is not just about prayer; it’s about taking actionable steps in the streets and within the systems that serve vulnerable populations.
With a strong emphasis on solidarity and community involvement, Texas sets an example for others in the ongoing battle against human trafficking. The goal is clear: to eradicate this pressing issue by fostering an environment of healing, support, and justice for victims. Join the movement and stand with Texas in this urgent fight against exploitation.
