Sharks’ Pavol Regenda Selected for Slovakia’s Olympic Hockey Team

Pavol Regenda has been named to Slovakia’s hockey roster for the upcoming Olympic Games in Milan Cortina, set to begin on February 11, 2024. This announcement adds to the roster of players from the San Jose Sharks participating in the tournament, which also includes Philipp Kurashev (Switzerland), Alexander Wennberg (Sweden), and Macklin Celebrini (Canada).

Regenda, a 26-year-old left winger, has had a limited presence with the Sharks this season, appearing in just six games. Nonetheless, he has made a significant impact during his time on the ice, scoring all three of the Sharks’ goals in a recent 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. This performance marked his first career hat trick. In total, Regenda has netted six goals this season, including one in a victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets earlier in the week.

Most of Regenda’s season has been spent with the AHL’s Barracuda, where he has recorded four goals and eight assists over 28 games. He was called up to the Sharks for his second stint on December 30, 2023, demonstrating his potential and adaptability.

Previous Olympic Experience

This will not be Regenda’s first experience on the Olympic stage. He previously won a bronze medal with Slovakia at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, contributing significantly by scoring one goal and providing three assists. His international career also includes participation in four consecutive World Championships, during which he has scored a total of nine goals in 29 games.

Regenda joined the Sharks through a trade with the Anaheim Ducks in January 2023, in exchange for forward Justin Bailey. His journey reflects a commitment to both individual growth and the team’s objectives.

Upcoming Olympic Matches

The men’s hockey tournament will kick off with the preliminary round on February 11, 2024. Regenda’s Slovakia will face Finland, while Wennberg’s Sweden will take on the host nation, Italy. Other nations, including Switzerland, Canada, and the United States, are set to play their first matches the following day.

With the Olympics fast approaching, the Sharks and their fans will be watching closely as their players represent their countries on one of the biggest international stages in sports. Regenda’s selection highlights not only his skill but also the growing presence of Sharks players in high-stakes competitions, showcasing their talent on a global scale.
