Grand Forks Business Owner Champions Community Employment Initiative

The Ready4Work Program, launched by the local nonprofit organization Love In Action in December 2023, aims to help individuals overcome employment barriers in Grand Forks. Preston Dahl, the owner of Dahl House Properties, is the first business owner to participate in this initiative, believing it can significantly benefit the community.

Community Focus and Personal Convictions

Dahl’s involvement stems from his personal connection with Doris Lebby, the board president of Love In Action, as well as his own religious beliefs. He described the program as “a ministry” where individuals need someone who believes in their potential and is willing to provide them with a second chance. “I see the skilled labor shortage constantly,” Dahl stated, emphasizing the challenges he faces in hiring suitable subcontractors for housing renovations.

Many individuals seeking employment may feel defined by their past experiences, leading them to assume that no one will offer them an opportunity. Dahl believes that the Ready4Work Program has the potential to change this narrative, providing both the support and encouragement necessary for individuals to succeed. He remarked on the importance of patience and compassion in fostering these relationships.

Addressing Employment Barriers

Everett C. Jones Sr., executive director of Love In Action, explained that the organization is dedicated to creating programs that address community gaps. He noted that while many ask why individuals struggle to find work, they often overlook critical factors such as lack of reliable transportation, necessary documentation like birth certificates and Social Security cards, and health limitations. “People want to work but sometimes need an extra push or guidance,” Jones said.

The Ready4Work Program will provide support from staff supervisors who will help participants stay focused, remain on task, and ensure they have reliable transportation to their jobs. This approach targets essential barriers to employment that are often overlooked. Additionally, Jones highlighted that the program aims to mitigate the perceived risks for employers by assisting with costs such as insurance, allowing employers to focus solely on wages.

Jones emphasized that the program is not limited to the homeless community but is open to anyone facing shortfalls who wishes to return to work. He encouraged business owners with short-term, seasonal, or ongoing labor needs to reach out. “Our doors will be open to accept applications,” he stated.

For those interested in participating or supporting the program, Jones can be contacted via email at [email protected] or by phone at (701) 330-8775. Contributions to assist with program coordination, insurance, compliance, supervision, and sustainability are also welcome. “We are grateful for the donors that we have, and we are excited for anyone who wants to be part of this transition as we move forward,” Jones remarked.

The Ready4Work Program represents a proactive step towards reducing barriers to employment in Grand Forks, demonstrating the potential for community initiatives to foster personal and collective growth.
