Catherine “Cathy” Shea McCurdy, a beloved member of the Hermosa Beach community, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 74 on December 3, 2025. Her death was attributed to complications from diabetes, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to her community.
Born in Queens, New York, to Raymond and Erma “Susie” Shea, Cathy spent her childhood in Hermosa Beach. She graduated from Redondo Union High School in the class of 1969 and later married Richard H. “Dick” McCurdy in 1978. The couple became known not only for their work in the glass industry at Shea Company but also for their extensive community involvement.
Cathy served on the Hermosa Beach School Board and worked for many years at Hermosa Valley School. Her passion for education led her to found the Kiwanis Builders Club at the school, fostering leadership and community service among students. She was also a strong supporter of the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and the Sister City Association, reflecting her commitment to enriching the lives of those around her.
In addition to her educational contributions, Cathy represented Hermosa Beach on the Los Angeles County Beach Commission for nearly a decade. Her dedication to community service was further exemplified through her active participation in the Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach, where she took on various leadership roles, including President. In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Cathy was honored as the “Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year” in 1998.
Cathy’s funeral services and inurnment are scheduled for 11 a.m. on February 21, 2026, at St. Cross Episcopal Church, located at 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach. A celebration of her life will follow immediately at the Kiwanis Hall, 2515 Valley Dr., Hermosa Beach.
The community remembers Cathy McCurdy not only for her professional achievements but also for her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others. Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations in Hermosa Beach and beyond.
