Serena Althea Blaire D. Mackay, a junior at The Founders Academy Public Charter School in Manchester, New Hampshire, has been selected as one of ten finalists for the Emerging Global Filipino Icon 2026. This recognition comes after a competitive selection process involving nearly 200 entries from around the world, and Mackay is the youngest nominee to reach the Top 10.
At just 16 years old, Mackay has established herself as a prominent advocate for youth engagement and civic education. A first-generation immigrant, she moved to the United States only a year ago. Since then, she has taken significant steps to empower young Filipinos through her nonprofit organization, LUHOG Youth Organization. This youth-led network spans three countries and aims to equip young individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to understand power, history, and policy.
A Trailblazer in Civic Education
Among her many initiatives, Mackay played a pivotal role in organizing “MAMULAT: The Pulse of Youth in Political Consciousness,” a webinar focused on the 1987 Philippine Constitution. Her early involvement in civic initiatives began at the age of 14 when she became the youngest intern at the Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO). In this role, she contributed to grant research and the development of funding strategies pertinent to public health and advocacy.
One of her most notable achievements came in 2025 when she led the Tayo Annual Virtual Youth Summit. As the sole project proponent, she convened a group of young Filipino leaders to address the critical issues of disinformation and historical truth. Additionally, she co-founded the Tayo Youth Advisory Council, which integrates youth voices into organizational governance. As the council’s external chair, Mackay oversees various committees focusing on policy, volunteer engagement, and editorial projects.
Personal Journey and Community Impact
Mackay’s transition to life in the United States was not without its challenges. She expressed her feelings about leaving her family and friends in the Philippines, stating, “Knowing that there is a place like The Founders Academy providing me with a civic education to pursue my work in historical awareness, uplift youth voices, and nurture my love for community service made the adjustment worthwhile.”
Her involvement at The Founders Academy goes beyond her nonprofit work. Mackay serves as the Student Body Vice President, co-captains the Speech and Debate Club, and holds the position of Secretary of the National Honor Society. Cassie Hayes, Dean of School, expressed pride in Mackay’s accomplishments, noting, “She embodies the Founders’ mission each and every day.”
The ten finalists, including Mackay, will participate in a panel discussion to determine the recipient of the Emerging Global Filipino Icon 2026 title during the Global Filipino Icon Awards 2026 on January 31, 2026, in Dubai. This event marks a significant opportunity for young leaders to gain recognition on a global stage.
The Founders Academy, which caters to students in grades 5 through 12, is committed to developing principled leaders through a curriculum that emphasizes classical studies and civic responsibility. The school is currently accepting applications for the 2026-2027 academic year. More information can be found at www.thefoundersacademy.org.
