The Martin House Children’s Advocacy Center in Longview, Texas, marked a significant milestone on March 14, 2024, with the groundbreaking of a new facility designed to support abused children and their families. This new building, which will span 10,000 square feet, represents a nearly threefold increase in space compared to the existing facility on Garfield Drive. The nonprofit aims to address the growing demand for child advocacy services in East Texas.
The Martin House serves children and families from several counties, including Gregg, Harrison, Marion, and Upshur. The organization emphasized that the new facility will allow them to provide services in a more child-friendly environment while enhancing confidentiality. “The new space will enable The Martin House CAC to continue to serve children who have suffered the trauma of abuse in a child-friendly environment with increased confidentiality for the foreseeable future,” the organization stated.
Facility Features and Community Support
The upgraded facility is designed with specialized spaces to better serve its clients. Among the planned features are separate waiting areas for forensic and therapy clients, as well as dedicated office space for staff and work areas for law enforcement and social services. This design aims to create a supportive atmosphere tailored to the specific needs of children and families facing challenging circumstances.
Funding for the new facility has been a community effort. According to Michael Clements Jr., capital campaign chair, the total cost of the project is estimated at $6.25 million, with 94% of the necessary funds already committed. This significant financial backing illustrates the community’s dedication to improving outcomes for vulnerable children.
The ceremonial groundbreaking event drew a diverse group of attendees, including Roxanne Stevenson, CEO of Martin House; Melanie Mathews, chair of the board of directors; Gregg County Judge Bill Stoudt; Longview Mayor Kristen Ishihara; and numerous supporters from the community. Their presence underscored the collective commitment to enhancing the resources available for children in need.
Impact and Recognition
Martin House is one of 72 child advocacy centers across Texas and part of a broader network of approximately 800 centers nationwide. Each year, the organization provides crucial services to over 900 children and their families, demonstrating the ongoing need for such facilities in the region.
As construction begins, the Martin House Children’s Advocacy Center is poised to strengthen its mission of providing a safe haven for children facing abuse, ensuring that they receive the comprehensive support they need in a welcoming environment. The new facility represents not just an expansion of space, but a deepened commitment to the well-being of East Texas families.
