Steam Offers Refunds for Ashes of Creation After Leadership Crisis

The future of the Kickstarter-funded MMORPG Ashes of Creation is uncertain following significant leadership changes and widespread layoffs at Intrepid Studios. Players who purchased the game via Steam now have the opportunity to request refunds, even if they exceed the platform’s usual refund policy.

Ashes of Creation holds the record for the most successful MMO Kickstarter campaign, raising nearly $3.3 million since its launch in 2017. The game entered Steam Early Access in December 2023, but shortly thereafter, the company faced turmoil with the resignation of key figures and mass layoffs.

Leadership Resignations and Layoffs

Steven Sharif, founder of Intrepid Studios and director of Ashes of Creation, was the first to resign, citing ethical concerns after the studio’s board assumed control and demanded he execute what he deemed unethical directives. Following his departure, a significant portion of the senior leadership team followed suit, leading to a wave of layoffs that affected many remaining employees.

Margaret Krohn, a former communications manager at Intrepid Studios, expressed her concerns about the game’s future, stating on LinkedIn that she was unsure how development could continue without the core team. The abrupt changes have left many players feeling uneasy about their investments.

Refund Process for Players

While Kickstarter backers and those who bought the game directly from Intrepid Studios may find themselves without recourse, Steam users have reported varying levels of success in obtaining refunds. Some players have successfully navigated the refund process by submitting a help request and selecting the ‘I have a question about this purchase’ option, rather than explicitly requesting a refund.

Steam’s standard policy typically denies refunds for games played over two hours or owned for more than two weeks. Yet, exceptions may be made in special circumstances, such as the ongoing issues surrounding Ashes of Creation. Players have shared their experiences on forums, with many reporting successful refunds despite having played for dozens of hours.

“My goal on PC isn’t to topple Steam,” said the Epic Games Store boss, emphasizing the need for market presence rather than direct competition.

Although there are no guarantees for approval, players are encouraged to utilize the guidance and examples provided by others who have successfully navigated the process. With the game’s future now in jeopardy, many players are seeking to reclaim their investments amid growing uncertainty surrounding Ashes of Creation.
