Game Science, the developer behind the acclaimed game series, has released a new in-engine video for its upcoming title, Black Myth: Zhong Kui. The six-minute video, which coincides with the celebration of the Chinese New Year and the upcoming Year of the Horse, serves as both a cooking demonstration and a teaser for the game.
Set to follow the highly anticipated launch of Black Myth: Wukong in 2024, Black Myth: Zhong Kui will be the second installment in the series. The first game garnered multiple awards, although it notably did not win the prestigious Game of the Year accolade at The Game Awards, much to the disappointment of the developers.
In this latest installment, players will step into the shoes of Zhong Kui, a legendary Taoist deity and exorcist known as the Ghost King. Unlike the previous game that focused on the Monkey King, this title promises a darker narrative filled with ghostly and demonic adversaries. The video, while designed for entertainment purposes, showcases the graphics and atmosphere that fans can expect, rather than delving into the story specifics.
The cooking segment features a woman preparing a fish soup, which takes a whimsical turn as she interacts with various supernatural elements, including a possessed fish and a sleeping demon-baby plant. A man in the video also engages with a friendly demon residing within a large seashell, seeking a piece of meat. This surreal cooking experience culminates when the finished dish is presented to a masked prisoner under the watchful gaze of a guardian, who may or may not be Zhong Kui himself.
Despite the playful nature of the cooking show, the video has been labeled as “non-canon” by Game Science, indicating that it is more of a visual treat than a narrative reveal.
Fans previously received their first glimpse of the Ghost King during the reveal trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui released in August 2025. In that trailer, Zhong Kui is depicted as a formidable figure, characterized by his dark complexion and imposing stature as he rides a tiger.
At this point, Game Science has not disclosed a specific release date for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, leaving fans eager for further announcements regarding this exciting new chapter in the franchise. As anticipation builds, the developer’s unique blend of folklore and action continues to captivate the gaming community.
