WestEnd Films has launched international sales for its upcoming feature film, The Last Day, directed by acclaimed visual artist Rachel Rose. The film, which is currently in post-production, features a star-studded cast including Alicia Vikander, Wagner Moura, and Victoria Pedretti. The first-look image was unveiled during the European Film Market in Berlin on Thursday, marking the beginning of sales activities for the project.
The North American rights for The Last Day are co-represented by CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group. The film draws inspiration from Virginia Woolf’s iconic novel, Mrs. Dalloway. It unfolds over a single summer day in New York City, capturing a fleeting encounter between two mothers as they navigate pivotal moments in their lives.
Vikander portrays Julia, a writer facing creative paralysis and unresolved grief while coming to terms with her daughter’s transition into adolescence. An unexpected meeting with Taylor, played by Pedretti, a labor and delivery nurse experiencing a postpartum crisis, disrupts Julia’s carefully constructed life and compels her to reevaluate her choices. Moura, who is currently nominated for an Oscar, plays Julia’s husband, a reliable yet increasingly remote figure whose own struggles highlight the tensions within the family.
Rachel Rose, known for her work in prestigious venues such as LACMA and Tate Modern, is making her feature film directorial debut with this project. Rose has garnered acclaim in the art world for her conceptually rich and formally innovative work. She expressed her vision for the film, stating, “Becoming a mother felt to me like a collision between a beginning and a threat, and I knew I needed to write from the existential tension of that contradiction.”
The film’s structure is influenced by Woolf’s exploration of self-erasure through the lens of an ordinary day, as Rose explained. “In Mrs. Dalloway, I was struck by how Virginia Woolf reveals Clarissa’s self-erasure not through overt drama, but through the texture of a single, ordinary day — errands, chance encounters — until something immense has shifted inside her. That structure became my guide.”
Production of The Last Day is spearheaded by Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler, whose company, Killer Films, has produced a number of notable arthouse films, including Past Lives and May December. Alongside them, David Kaplan, Lucie Elwes, and Rose are also producing, with Maja Hoffmann and Lucas Hoffmann serving as executive producers.
The film’s creative team includes cinematographer Eric Yue (known for I Saw the TV Glow), editor Taylor Levy (who worked on Bodies Bodies Bodies), and costume designer April Napier (from Lady Bird). The team also features Emmy-winning music supervisor Susan Jacobs.
WestEnd Films has embraced this project under its WeLove label, which is dedicated to promoting female-driven narratives and supporting female talent in the film industry. With its compelling premise and a talented team behind the camera, The Last Day is poised to make a significant impact as it moves forward in the international market.
