A new film, Where To?, directed by Israeli writer and director Assaf Machnes, is making waves at this year’s Berlinale. The film explores complex themes of trauma, masculinity, queer identity, and the human connection between Israelis and Palestinians through the evolving relationship of its two main characters. The narrative follows Hassan, a 55-year-old Palestinian Uber driver portrayed by Ehab Salami, and Amir, a 25-year-old Israeli passenger played by Ido Tako.
The story unfolds in Berlin’s vibrant nightlife, where Hassan transports various passengers through the city’s party scene. One fateful night, Amir climbs into his car, embarking on a journey of self-discovery that includes sexual exploration and personal growth. As they share rides over two years, an unexpected bond develops between them, allowing both men to confront their respective struggles and traumas.
Exploring Personal Stories Amidst Broader Context
Machnes drew inspiration for Where To? from a personal experience during a winter visit to Berlin. He recounts a poignant encounter with a Palestinian Uber driver, revealing, “I felt that we understood each other somehow, better than anyone else, without saying much.” This moment sparked the idea of a recurring connection between two individuals from different backgrounds. As the film developed, Machnes shifted the focus to Hassan, recognizing the importance of portraying individuals grappling with their untold stories.
In the film, Hassan listens to Amir discuss a painful breakup, prompting him to reflect on his own estrangement from his daughter, who plans to marry her German boyfriend. This father-son dynamic emerges as a central theme, highlighting the vulnerabilities both characters face. The narrative’s backdrop is further complicated by the events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched attacks, escalating tensions in the region. Machnes was intentional about incorporating this context without making it the film’s primary focus, stating, “The problem was the same problem before, and it’s still the same problem after.”
A Collaborative Effort Across Borders
The production of Where To? reflects a collaborative effort among creatives from multiple backgrounds. Alongside Machnes, the film features contributions from first-time feature director of photography Maayane Bouhnik from Israel and Palestinian composer Habib Hanna Shehadeh. “This film is a collaboration between Israelis and Palestinians and Germans,” emphasizes Machnes, underscoring the film’s commitment to unity and understanding in a time characterized by division and conflict.
The film, which is currently being handled for world sales by Lucky Number, is positioned as a timely exploration of the complexities surrounding identity and connection in a world that often seeks to divide. Machnes’ dedication to his father and others who “simply kept driving” serves as a reminder of the human experiences that transcend cultural and political divides.
As audiences engage with Where To?, they are invited to witness not only the unfolding relationship between Hassan and Amir but also to reflect on their own narratives and the connections that can emerge from shared experiences, even in the most challenging circumstances.
