Byron T. Gorres, aged 89, passed away on February 21, 2026, in Stillwater. He was a respected figure in the scientific community, having dedicated over 34 years of his career to 3M as both a scientist and a leader. His contributions to the company and the field are remembered by colleagues and family alike.
Born to loving parents, Byron leaves behind a legacy of family and achievement. He is survived by his wife, Georgene Gorres, and four children: Sheryl (Mike) Zaworski, Geoff Gorres, Gwen (Charlie) Gierke, and Brett (Angie) Gorres. In addition to his children, he is fondly remembered by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. Byron was preceded in death by his parents, sister Barbara, and brother Earl.
Funeral Arrangements and Community Tributes
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on February 27, 2026, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, located at 14107 Hudson Rd S., Afton, MN. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during a visitation on February 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Simonets Funeral Home, situated at 6429 Osgood Ave N., Stillwater. Attendees can also visit the church one hour prior to the service. Following the service, Byron will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery in Afton.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be directed to Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. This gesture reflects Byron’s commitment to his faith and the community he cherished.
