The beloved medical sitcom Scrubs is making a comeback nearly 15 years after its original finale. The revival was officially confirmed by ABC in July 2025, reigniting interest in the series that originally aired from 2001 to 2010. Set in the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital, the show followed the lives of young medical professionals, blending humor with genuine emotional moments.
The final episode of the original series saw J.D., played by Zach Braff, depart Sacred Heart. His last scene was a poignant reflection on his future, imagining a life filled with love and family alongside Elliott, portrayed by Sarah Chalke. While J.D. moved on, other main characters, including Turk (played by Donald Faison) and Dr. Cox (played by John C. McGinley), remained at the hospital.
The subsequent ninth season, subtitled Med School, shifted the focus to a medical school setting, introducing a new cast alongside the returning favorites. Only Braff, Faison, and McGinley continued as regulars, while others made guest appearances. New characters included Kerry Bishé and Dave Franco, but the season concluded after just one run.
As the revival unfolds, excitement is palpable among the cast and fans. “After COVID and the [SAG-AFTRA] strike, the show found new life with younger people. Med students love the show,” said Reyes in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly in September 2025. She expressed her gratitude for the renewed interest, particularly in the enduring relationship between Turk and Carla.
Reflecting on the revival, Reyes emphasized the importance of maintaining the original show’s spirit. “It was really important for us to continue that tone that made the show so special,” she remarked, highlighting the involvement of creator Bill Lawrence in the new project.
The challenge ahead involves blending the original cast with newcomers. The fresh ensemble includes interns played by Ava Bunn, Jacob Dudman, David Gridley, Layla Mohammadi, and Amanda Morrow. Many of these actors were not even born when Scrubs originally premiered, yet they are eager to contribute to the show’s legacy. Morrow described the on-set environment as welcoming, attributing a “no a**hole policy” to the original cast, which creates a safe space for everyone involved.
The revival promises to capture the hearts of both seasoned fans and new viewers. McGinley hinted at “a lot of complications” ahead, with the show also set to stream on Hulu. Reyes expressed her desire for character growth, noting that the impact of time will be evident in how the characters evolve.
The official synopsis of the revival reveals that J.D. and Turk will reunite at Sacred Heart for the first time in years. “Medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time,” it states, suggesting that both old and new characters will navigate the challenges of hospital life with humor and heart.
Fans can catch Scrubs on ABC every Wednesday at 20:00 ET, marking a significant return to a series that has left an indelible mark on television history.
