Jensen Beach Boys Wrestling Claims Fifth at State Championships

UPDATE: The Jensen Beach High School boys wrestling team has made a significant mark at the Class 2A IBT state championships held on March 7, 2023, at the Silver Spurs Arena. Despite losing their star wrestler Sebastian Degennaro, the Falcons secured an impressive fifth-place finish overall, amassing 77.5 points.

This performance was nothing short of remarkable as four wrestlers from Jensen Beach reached the podium, showcasing the team’s resilience and talent. Head coach Tom McMath praised his athletes, stating, “They balled out,” emphasizing their ability to rise to the occasion when it mattered most.

Leading the charge was freshman sensation Kane Drake, who made an unforgettable debut by finishing as the runner-up in the 120-pound weight class. Drake’s journey to the finals was filled with intense competition, including a decisive 21-8 majority decision over Lincoln junior Juan Torres and an 18-1 technical fall against East River senior Isaiah Rivera. His semifinal victory came against Gulf Breeze senior Garrett Ferguson in a thrilling 6-1 decision.

Reflecting on his experience, Drake said, “I really had no clue I’d get this far,” after suffering a tough defeat in the finals against Riverdale’s Eric Bush. Drake, who concluded his first season with an impressive 41-7 record, expressed pride in overcoming older competitors, stating, “It felt great to go out on the mat, go against those older guys and dominate.”

In addition to Drake’s standout performance, Jensen Beach also saw strong showings from several other wrestlers. Sair Lopez (126 pounds), Tyson Reyes (215 pounds), and Blake Elder (285 pounds) all secured third-place finishes in their respective classes. Lopez wrapped up his freshman year with a commendable 36-6 record, while Reyes concluded his season at 26-2. Elder, in his final high school match, earned a medical withdrawal victory, finishing his senior season at 52-5.

Coach McMath highlighted the determination of his team, stating, “The season is a grind sometimes, but we show up at this tournament. I’m just super proud, super grateful for our program and our kids.”

As the state championships concluded, Jensen Beach’s strong performance without their former champion sets a promising foundation for the future. With young talents like Kane Drake stepping into the spotlight, the Falcons appear poised to continue their legacy in Florida wrestling.

For fans and supporters, this thrilling competition not only showcased the skill of the wrestlers but also the heart and dedication of Jensen Beach’s wrestling program, leaving everyone eager for what’s next.
