KJ Torbert Makes History as First Father-Son Mr. Basketball Duo

In a historic moment for Michigan basketball, KJ Torbert, a guard from East Lansing High School, was awarded the title of Mr. Basketball on March 11, 2024. This achievement marks him as the first son of a former winner in the award’s 46-year history. KJ’s father, Kelvin Torbert, received the same honor in 2001 while playing for Flint Northwestern.

Kelvin Torbert expressed immense pride in his son’s accomplishment, stating, “It means a lot to me, just the magnitude of the award. I think I am more happy for him than I was for myself. Just going off the word my dad always told me, ‘There’s only one man that wants to see you do better than them, and that’s your dad.’” He added that he is excited for KJ to win the award on his own terms.

A Rising Star in Michigan Basketball

KJ Torbert, standing at 6 feet 3 inches tall, has made a significant impact on the court this season, averaging over 25 points and six rebounds per game. His performance has not only led to personal accolades but has also helped propel the Trojans to success. As the defending champions, the Trojans are set to face Ann Arbor Pioneer in the state quarterfinals on the evening of March 12, 2024.
