Plante Brothers and Shaugabay Shine in Bulldogs’ 7-3 Victory
UPDATE: In a stunning display of teamwork and skill, the Plante brothers, Zam and Max, alongside Jayson Shaugabay, propelled the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs to a commanding 7-3 nonconference win against Bemidji State on October 27, 2023. Each Plante brother recorded a collegiate-high of four points, with two goals and two assists apiece, marking a pivotal moment in their season.
This victory comes after a challenging start, as the Bulldogs found themselves trailing 2-0 just under five minutes into the game. However, the trio quickly turned the tide, scoring three goals before the first intermission to reclaim control. Jayson Shaugabay was instrumental, contributing a goal and three assists, showcasing his playmaking abilities.
The Bulldogs’ sophomore goaltender, Adam Gajan, made 17 saves on 20 shots, solidifying his presence in the net as the team navigated a rocky start.
The Plante brothers ignited the offense, with Max Plante netting his first shorthanded goal as a Bulldog in the second period, while Zam Plante scored two power-play goals, helping the Bulldogs convert on 2-for-4 power-play opportunities after struggling early in the season.
Following their early deficit, the Bulldogs rallied with goals by Max and Zam, and senior defenseman Joey Pierce, who scored only his second career goal. Freshman Daniel Shlaine also made his mark, scoring his first collegiate goal shortly after Max’s second goal, widening the lead to 5-2.
The Plante brothers’ performance is particularly significant as Max now averages 2.2 points per game, having already notched five goals and six assists this season. Zam follows closely with three goals and five assists, while Shaugabay has tallied two goals and seven assists, collectively adding to a formidable offensive line.
As the Bulldogs gear up for their rematch against the Beavers at 6:07 p.m. on October 28, 2023, at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, fans are eager to see if this momentum will carry into the next game. This matchup is crucial as it marks the last home game for the Bulldogs until November 7-8, when they face St. Cloud State in NCHC play.
With a promising start to the season, the Bulldogs have shown their potential, and their recent performance underscores the chemistry and skill of their key players. Expect a thrilling rematch as they look to build on this impressive victory and solidify their position in the standings.
