Heavy Rain Forces Southland Conference Semifinal Delay at Lake Charles
A relentless downpour washed out Day 2 of the Southland Conference’s Lake Charles Bracket Friday, pushing the critical semifinal matchup between McNeese State Cowgirls and Nicholls Colonels to Saturday at 2 p.m. at Joe Miller Field.
Both teams had opened the double-elimination tournament on Thursday with victories, setting the stage for a pivotal winners’ bracket showdown. Second-seeded McNeese State (36-19) narrowly defeated Stephen F. Austin 5-4, while third-seeded Nicholls (30-21) edged Northwestern State 7-4.
McNeese head coach James Landreneau expressed cautious optimism despite the delay.
“There isn’t much we could do today,”
Landreneau said.
“We will just use the day to rest, recover, and get ready for Saturday. We are excited to play.”
Impact of the Rain Delay on Teams and Players
The unexpected day off comes at a key moment for McNeese, whose team has surged after a rocky start to the season. Early losses to Nicholls had put the Cowgirls at 1-5 in league play, but a spectacular turnaround — winning 11 of 12 conference games — earned them the right to host the bracket in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Senior star Maddie Weeks highlighted the advantage of playing at home.
“We love to play at home in front of our fans,”
Weeks said.
“They give us energy.”
Practicing inside McNeese’s facility, each of the four semifinal teams received an hour of hitting time, trying to keep sharp despite the downtime. Landreneau believes the break won’t tip the balance.
“Maybe it helps us being at home a little instead of sitting around a hotel all day,”
he said,
“but I think everybody will be ready to go tomorrow.”

The Cowgirls aim to overturn their early-season misfortunes against Nicholls, who held them to close but decisive wins in those first meetings.
“That was a long time ago, and it wasn’t that we played that badly; they played well,”
Landreneau said.
“Their pitchers kept us off balance, and they got the big hits. I think we are ready. I like where we are at and how we are playing now.”
Another key factor is the health of designated player Nyjah Fontenot, who is recovering from a knee injury. Fontenot participated in Thursday’s win as part of a cautious comeback.
“We are easing her back into it,”
Landreneau confirmed, hopeful the extra rest will aid her return.
Additional Matches and Championship Schedule
Before the McNeese-Nicholls rematch, Stephen F. Austin (29-25) faces Northwestern State (24-28) in an elimination game at 11 a.m. Saturday. Both teams hold 1-1 tournament records, raising the stakes.
The Southland Conference title game is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday, with a second game to follow only if necessary.
