Hurricanes Shut Out Flyers 3-0 to Seize Control in Game 1 of NHL Second Round
Logan Stankoven’s two goals and a stellar shutout performance by goaltender Frederik Andersen powered the Carolina Hurricanes to a commanding 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 1 of their second-round Stanley Cup playoff series Saturday night in Raleigh, N.C.
Carolina wasted no time establishing dominance, jumping to a 2-0 lead within the first eight minutes and never looking back. Stankoven, who has been on fire throughout the playoffs, scored the opening goal just 1:31 into the match on a sharp redirect. Jackson Blake added another goal at 7:30, weaving between defenders before slipping the puck past Flyers goalie Dan Vladar. Stankoven then sealed the shutout with his second tally later in the game.
Andersen stopped all 19 shots to earn his second shutout of this postseason and the seventh shutout in his playoff career, backstopping Carolina’s aggressive and fast-paced style that left Philadelphia’s offense struggling to generate chances.
Flyers Hampered by Slow Start, Discipline Issues
The Flyers, playing their first playoff game since 2020, looked sluggish, managing just nine shots on goal through the first two periods and failing to capitalize on four power-play opportunities, where they were outshot 3-2.
Coach Rick Tocchet admitted postgame the Flyers were unprepared for Carolina’s speed and intensity.
“We talked about it, we just didn’t live it on the ice. We weren’t quick enough for their speed,” Tocchet said. “It’s a good baptism for some of our players.”
The game grew physical in the final 10 minutes, with multiple players from both sides receiving 10-minute misconduct penalties, including Flyers’ Trevor Zegras and Nick Seeler and Hurricanes’ Jackson Blake and Shayne Gostisbehere.
Key Absences Fail to Hurt Hurricanes’ Momentum
Despite missing defenseman Alexander Nikishin due to a concussion sustained in the first round, Carolina smoothly integrated veteran Mike Reilly into the lineup. Reilly contributed assists on both the first and second goals, demonstrating depth and chemistry that bode well for the series ahead.
The Flyers were without their regular-season goal leader, Owen Tippett, due to an undisclosed injury, further limiting their offensive options against the Hurricanes’ tight defense.
What’s Next: Game 2 Set for Monday Night in Raleigh
The Hurricanes, who swept the Ottawa Senators in the first round and have yet to trail in any postseason game this year, hold a psychological edge heading into Game 2 Monday night at home. Philadelphia will need faster starts and sharper execution to rebound and avoid falling into a deep hole early in the second round.
This decisive Game 1 performance positions Carolina as a formidable contender in the Eastern Conference, signaling a tough road ahead for the Flyers as they attempt to extend their playoff run for the first time since 2020.
