Michael Allio Opens Up on Faith and Loss After Wife Laura’s Cancer Death

Michael Allio Unveils Emotional Faith Journey After Wife’s Death

Michael Allio, known for his appearances on The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise, recently opened up about his deeply personal and “up and down” faith journey following the death of his wife, Laura Ritter-Allio, who died from breast cancer in January 2019 at the age of 33.

Speaking exclusively to Us Weekly as he celebrates the release of his debut children’s book, Where the Wild Heart Grows, Allio credits his faith as a central source of strength during the most challenging period of his life. “One thing that I’ve talked to other grievers and widowers about is visualization helps,” he said. “Whether it’s God or the belief in a higher being, I know for a fact I’m going to see Laura again, like, I know that. And so that brings me relief.”

Turning Grief Into Purpose Through Parenting and Storytelling

After Laura’s passing, Michael devoted himself to raising their son, James, who was just 2 years old at the time. He emphasizes creating a legacy of positive memories rather than succumbing to grief. “It’s all about what kind of stories am I going to collect to be able to tell her? Because if she is sitting there and I wasted my way on the couch mourning her loss, I know she’d be so upset,” he shared.

Michael explained how coping with cancer’s harsh reality reshaped his perspective: “We don’t have time to pretend that we have more time. You don’t have to be fully healed to begin living again. Now is the time to go out there and seek the kind of life that you want.”

New Children’s Book Explores Courage and Life’s Hardest Moments

Where the Wild Heart Grows explores powerful themes of courage, loss, and growth through life’s toughest seasons. Michael intentionally designed the book to teach his son how to face pain head-on rather than avoid it. “One thing I wanted to make sure I did was to not teach my son how to avoid pain, but learn how to walk through it and walk with it,” he explained.

By humanizing himself as a parent who struggles too, Michael believes he’s building a “very strong bond” and a “safe place” for James to express emotions honestly as they remember Laura together.

Faith Evolution and Parenting Under the Spotlight

Raised in the Catholic Church, Michael said his faith has experienced highs and lows since Laura’s death. As the newly appointed godfather to his niece, he also regularly attends church with James and fosters spiritual conversations that involve discussing their late mother openly.

“My own personal faith has gone up and down, and it’s a journey. But what I know for a fact is that if I’m showing up for and we’re having the conversations about Laura… He does know that he’s going to see her again, that she is looking over us, just like all the people we’ve lost,” Michael shared.

A Son’s Spirit Keeps Michael Moving Forward

Michael proudly reveals that James is now in third grade and keeps busy with karate, baseball, and basketball. “He got his mom’s brains,” Michael said, highlighting his son’s wit and curiosity. He strives to instill kindness, curiosity, and empathy: “Ask questions. Put yourself in somebody else’s shoes. Don’t rush to judgment and be kind and be gentle with people.”

Where the Wild Heart Grows is available online now, offering a heartfelt beacon for families navigating loss and resilience.
