The Indianapolis Colts announced on Saturday that cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. has been placed on injured reserve due to a concussion, sidelining him for a minimum of four games. Ward sustained the injury during warmups prior to last weekend’s victory over the Arizona Cardinals. As a result, he missed the entire week of practices leading up to Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Ward, who is 29 years old, has recorded 13 tackles and three passes defensed in four games this season. He joined the Colts this year after spending time with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2018 to 2022 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. Notably, Ward was part of the Chiefs team that won the Super Bowl in the 2019 season and was also on the roster during two Super Bowl losses in 2020 and 2023. He achieved Pro Bowl status and was named a second-team All-Pro in 2023, having intercepted a career-high five passes and leading the NFL with 23 pass breakups.

With Ward’s absence, the Colts are making adjustments to their roster. They have signed running back Ameer Abdullah to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. Abdullah, 32, has appeared in two games this season, rushing three times for 13 yards and a touchdown. Over his ten-year career, he has amassed 2,007 rushing yards and 20 total touchdowns, including nine rushing and 11 receiving touchdowns, across 143 games with five NFL teams.

The Colts also elevated cornerback Cameron Mitchell and receiver Laquon Treadwell from their practice squad to bolster the team. This move comes after running back Tyler Goodson was ruled out due to a groin injury sustained on Friday. The Colts are facing further challenges as cornerback Kenny Moore II is questionable with an Achilles injury, while wide receivers Josh Downs (concussion) and Ashton Dulin (chest) have been ruled out for the game.

The Colts have a bye in Week 11, meaning the earliest Ward can return will be for the road game against the Kansas City Chiefs on November 23, 2023. As the team navigates these roster changes, they will look to maintain momentum against the Chargers and continue their season effectively.
