Neddy Latimer Honored with Shelter Naming in Leominster
In a heartfelt ceremony on October 16, 2023, the community of Leominster came together to honor Neddy Latimer, the longtime Executive Director of the Spanish American Center, by naming a new shelter the Neddy Latimer House. This facility aims to provide vital support to individuals and families in need, symbolizing hope and a fresh start for many.
Community Celebration Highlights Latimer’s Legacy
The atmosphere during the naming ceremony was both joyous and celebratory. Doug Bushman, Executive Director of the Fitchburg Housing Authority and CEO of Opportunities for Hope, expressed his admiration for Latimer, stating, “This is not just a building. It is a beacon of hope.” He highlighted her unwavering dedication to helping the underserved, noting that her commitment inspired the project that ultimately led to the shelter’s establishment.
Bushman welcomed attendees in Spanish, eliciting applause, and emphasized that various organizations, including the Spanish American Center and the United Way, played crucial roles in bringing the shelter to fruition. He noted that more than $3 million was invested to ensure the shelter met necessary standards and would serve as an inviting space for those seeking assistance.
During the ceremony, Bushman acknowledged the collaboration with Heading Home, a leading provider of emergency shelter and housing services in the region, reinforcing the importance of teamwork in supporting those in need. “We are still working with Neddy and her team to help individuals secure jobs and education,” he added.
Acknowledgments and Reflections
Mayor Dean Mazzarella also took the stage to express his appreciation for Latimer’s extensive contributions to the community over nearly four decades. He referred to her as “the story of us” for her lifelong dedication to serving others. Mazzarella jokingly remarked that it is challenging to refuse funding requests from Latimer, underscoring her influence and determination.
The ceremony also saw tributes from various leaders, including Kory Eng, President and CEO of the United Way of North Central Massachusetts. He praised Latimer and her team for their proactive approach, stating, “The Spanish American Center is two steps ahead of us, all the time.” Eng emphasized that the shelter embodies dignity and compassion, core values that Latimer represents.
Thomas Hughes, board chair of both the Fitchburg Housing Authority and Opportunities for Hope, described the event as “a celebration and a declaration of gratitude.” He articulated that the shelter is more than just a physical space but a symbol of care and community support in Latimer’s honor. “Everyone who seeks help here will be greeted by her name,” Hughes remarked.
Latimer’s husband, Jose Latimer, looked on proudly during the ceremony, visibly moved by the tributes to his wife. As the unveiling of the shelter’s sign took place, the crowd erupted in applause, culminating in a standing ovation for Latimer.
In her emotional address, Latimer expressed her gratitude for the support she has received throughout her career. “I am humbled and honored. This place will become a beacon of hope,” she said, thanking everyone involved in the project for their commitment to the newly named shelter.
As the event concluded, attendees enjoyed food and cake while touring the warm and welcoming shelter, designed to provide comfort to those in need. Father Julio Granados from the Holy Family of Nazareth Church offered a benediction, reminding everyone of the goodness within each person and the importance of community support.
The Neddy Latimer House stands as a testament to Latimer’s legacy of compassion and service, ensuring that those who seek help will always find a welcoming place.
