Angel City FC Celebrates Press, Riley in Emotional Farewell
UPDATE: In a heartfelt send-off, Angel City FC honored Christen Press and Ali Riley during their last home game of the regular season at BMO Stadium on October 29, 2024. Both players, who announced their retirement, left an indelible mark on the club’s history.
The match ended in a 2-0 loss to the Portland Thorns, but the focus quickly shifted to the emotional postgame ceremony celebrating the two local legends. Press and Riley, who were also roommates at Stanford University, have been pivotal figures for the club since its inception.
Angel City President and Co-Founder Julie Uhrman recognized Press during the ceremony, stating, “Our history starts with you.” Press, an L.A. native, expressed her gratitude to the community, saying, “This sport has grown and blossomed in my 14 years as a professional.”
Both players faced significant challenges in their careers, particularly Press, who returned to the field after enduring four surgeries and a devastating ACL injury in June 2022. She made her comeback in August 2024, emphasizing her commitment to inspiring young athletes. “I hope in some small way, the work that we did allows you to dream your wildest dreams,” she told the crowd.
Riley, who served as the club’s first captain, also made a triumphant return after a lengthy battle with a nerve issue that sidelined her for most of the 2024 season. In a touching gesture, current captain Sarah Gorden handed the armband back to Riley for the final moments of the game. Riley thanked fans for their support, stating, “It’s always been about the people to me.”
The loss to Portland dealt a significant blow to Angel City’s playoff aspirations, especially after Racing Louisville FC drew 2-2 against Gotham FC earlier in the day. Press’s attempt on goal in the second half was thwarted by Portland goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, highlighting the challenges the team faced.
As the regular season nears its conclusion, Angel City will play their final match on the road against the Chicago Stars on November 2, 2024. The outcome of this game will determine their playoff fate, making it a critical moment for the team and its supporters.
Stay tuned for further updates on Angel City FC as they navigate these emotional farewells and fight for a spot in the postseason.
