Hundreds Rally in Columbus for ‘No Kings’ Protest Event
On October 18, 2023, hundreds gathered at Stearns Park in Columbus for the ‘No Kings’ rally, a local event aimed at protesting the current administration’s policies. Organized by the Polk County Democratic Party, this rally was part of a larger movement, with 16 similar events planned across the region, including in Asheville, Brevard, Hendersonville, and Marion. Nationwide, more than 2,000 rallies took place, reflecting a significant wave of public dissent.
Community Engagement and Local Voices
The atmosphere at the rally was vibrant, featuring live music, sing-alongs, and speeches from local Democratic candidates such as Brent Caldwell, Doyle Brown, and Gary Schwartz. Ted Owen, Chair of the Polk County Democratic Party, emphasized the importance of local engagement. “We wanted to do something local for our community, and I think we’ve had a great turnout,” he stated. “People are really fired up, and it’s great to see so many passionate individuals come together.”
Another organizer, Chris Reynolds, highlighted the spirit of collaboration that characterized the event. “We wanted to create a sense of presence and demonstrate that we care deeply about our country and community,” he remarked. The rally provided an opportunity for candidates to connect with potential voters and articulate their visions for change.
Calls for Change and Representation
During the event, candidate Gary Schwartz, who is running for State House District 113, addressed the crowd about the pressing need for political transformation. He pointed out the detrimental effects of gerrymandering on fair representation in North Carolina. “If you want change, be the change,” Schwartz urged attendees, echoing a sentiment that resonated throughout the gathering.
The rally concluded with participants displaying numerous signs and banners, symbolizing their collective determination to stand against policies they perceive as threats to democracy. As the crowd dispersed, it was evident that the ‘No Kings’ rally had galvanized many residents, encouraging them to voice their concerns and advocate for their beliefs.
This event not only showcased local activism but also highlighted a growing movement across the nation, uniting individuals who are eager for change and wishing to make their voices heard.
