Barbara Ann (Flaherty) Connolly, a beloved resident of South Portland, passed away on October 17, 2025, at the age of 91 in Pineville, North Carolina. Surrounded by family, Barbara’s passing marks the end of a life characterized by love, community service, and dedication to family.

Born in 1933 to Barbara (Davis) and Andrew Flaherty, Barbara spent her formative years on Munjoy Hill in Portland. She attended Cathedral Grammar School and Cathedral High School, where she served as President of the Class of 1951. Her life took a significant turn when her sister, Mary, introduced her to a dashing classmate, Roger Connolly. The couple married in 1959 and celebrated an enduring partnership of 66 years.

In 1962, the Connolly family settled into a home on Walnut Street, an area known for its family-friendly atmosphere. Together, they raised two children, Michael and Maureen. Barbara’s commitment to education was evident in her extensive volunteer work at Frank I. Brown School, where she dedicated countless hours to enhancing both the school library and the community library. Additionally, she served as President of the Parent-Teacher Association.

Barbara was an active member of Holy Cross Church, contributing significantly to the parish community. Her professional life included an eight-year tenure at New England Tel and Tel, followed by roles at local daycares as her children grew. She later found her calling at the Warren Library and the South Portland Public Library, particularly enjoying her time at the Branch, where her passion for people and literature flourished.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Roger, and their children, Michael Connolly of Lawrence, Massachusetts, and Maureen Connolly, along with her son-in-law John Cunningham from Pineville, North Carolina. She cherished her role as a grandmother to Meghan Cunningham, Patrick Cunningham, and Kathryn Connolly, as well as her great-grandchildren, Roger and Clara Takach. She is also survived by her nephews, Stephen Mitchell and Dr. Timothy Mitchell, and her dear cousin, Anne Davis Griffin.

Her unwavering faith and zest for life were evident to those around her. Barbara was known for her daily prayers for family, friends, and even strangers, which many found comforting. She fostered numerous friendships through groups such as “the club ladies,” “the library ladies,” and various prayer groups. Barbara and Roger were renowned for their hospitality, often welcoming guests into their home with warmth, food, and laughter.

A public visitation will take place from 16:00 to 18:00 on October 22 at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home located at 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 on October 23 at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland, with interment at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Maine or the South Portland Food Cupboard, organizations where Barbara was a dedicated volunteer and supporter.
