Urgent Update: 1,400 Pounds of Winter Gear Distributed in Fairbanks

BREAKING NEWS: The annual coat drive in Fairbanks, Alaska, has just concluded, delivering 1,400 pounds of essential winter gear to those in need. The United Way of the Tanana Valley (UWTV) is actively distributing collected items, including hats, boots, gloves, and coats, to support the local community and evacuees from Typhoon Halong.

As of earlier today, community members have rallied together, donating winter clothing at locations such as Bailey’s Furniture and Walden Home Group, with cleaning provided by Northern Laundry Services. The outpouring of support highlights the resilience and generosity of Fairbanks residents.

Sarah Hollister, Executive Director of UWTV, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Seeing the community show up with so many coats really is just an amazing feeling. During tough times, it’s heartwarming to see our community come together.”

The collection took place from September 22 to October 12, with a dedicated team of volunteers sorting and organizing the donations over a four-hour session on Tuesday. The items are now housed at UWTV’s headquarters on North Cushman Street, awaiting distribution to 15 partner agencies, including Fairbanks Youth Advocates and the Farthest North Girl Scout Council.

On the same day, Student Support Services collected warm winter coats specifically for evacuees of Typhoon Halong, showcasing the urgent need for assistance following the devastating storm. Hollister noted that the timing of the coat drive aligned perfectly with this emerging need, allowing them to provide immediate support.

“This year, especially, many families are struggling economically. We’re proud to help provide warm coats for those in need, including families who may require new clothing for growing children,” Hollister added.

If there are any items left after partner agencies take what they need, UWTV plans to open the remaining stock to the public. Hollister urges those with gently used, freshly laundered coats to drop them off at the UWTV office before Friday. After that, donations can also be made to other local nonprofits such as the Fairbanks Resource Agency, the Salvation Army, and the Fairbanks Rescue Mission.

This initiative not only addresses immediate needs but also reinforces the spirit of community support that Fairbanks is known for. As cold weather approaches, this coat drive stands as a vital lifeline for many residents facing hardships.
