Port Neches Councilmembers Declare Candidacy for Mayoral Seat
In a significant political development for Port Neches, two city councilmembers have officially announced their intention to run for the mayoral seat previously held by the late Glenn Johnson. Terry Schwertner, the Place 5 Councilmember and Mayor Pro Tem, alongside Robert Arnold, the Place 4 Councilmember, are both vying for the unexpired term following Johnson’s passing last week.
Arnold has resigned from his council position to pursue the mayoral role. His term was due to expire in 2027. In contrast, Schwertner’s current term is set to conclude in 2026, allowing him to remain in office while campaigning, as state law permits councilmembers to run for mayor if their term ends within a specific timeframe.
Special Election Scheduled
During a special meeting on October 22, 2025, the Port Neches City Council approved the calling of a special election to fill the mayoral vacancy. Johnson’s term was also slated to end in 2027. The council is scheduled to convene again on October 28 to amend the special election ordinance and include the Place 4 unexpired term on the ballot.
The filing period for candidates aiming for the mayor’s seat begins on October 23 and will conclude on November 3. Meanwhile, those interested in the Place 4 seat can file their applications between October 29 and November 3. Applications are available at the Port Neches City Hall, located at 1005 Merriman St.
Election Date and Implications
The special election is scheduled for December 13, marking a crucial moment for the Port Neches community as it seeks to fill a leadership void. The outcome will not only determine the next mayor but also shape the direction of the city in the wake of Johnson’s legacy.
As the election approaches, both Schwertner and Arnold will likely outline their visions for Port Neches, engaging with residents to secure their support. The developments in this race will be closely watched as candidates navigate the political landscape during this pivotal time.
