Nelly Furtado Announces Indefinite Hiatus from Performing
Canadian pop singer Nelly Furtado has announced an indefinite hiatus from live performances following her recent tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of her debut album. In a heartfelt message to her fans, Furtado expressed her desire to focus on personal and creative projects that resonate more with her current life phase.
“I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future,” Furtado stated. She emphasized her enduring love for songwriting, describing it as a hobby that transformed into a fulfilling career. “I’ll identify as a songwriter forever,” she added, reflecting on her journey in the music industry.
Furtado shared a nostalgic photo of herself as a 20-year-old artist during her first professional gig at Lilith Fair. She expressed gratitude for the continued interest in her music, noting how songs like “I’m Like a Bird,” “Maneater,” and “Promiscuous,” along with collaborations with Timbaland, have resonated with both longtime fans and a new generation.
A Journey Through Music and Legacy
“My music has reached a whole new generation of fans, and I couldn’t be happier about that,” Furtado wrote. She recalled her excitement in 2000, hoping young listeners would rediscover her debut album, Whoa, Nelly!. “It’s been surreal and joyful” to see how her work continues to inspire, she noted, adding that it has reinforced her belief in the lasting impact of good music.
At 46 years old, Furtado has successfully navigated various musical genres, including R&B and Latin music. Her accolades include a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “I’m Like a Bird,” a Latin Grammy Award for her album Mi Plan, and multiple Juno Awards, along with a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame.
Furtado previously took a significant break from music to focus on her family, raising her three children. Her return to the industry last year with the album 7 was inspired in part by her eldest daughter, who showed her how her music was being embraced by Generation Z through digital platforms.
Looking Ahead
In her announcement, Furtado expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who supported her career. “I deeply thank all of those who have worked so hard to help me make my pop dreams come true,” she stated, acknowledging her collaborators and fans alike.
As she embarks on this new chapter, Furtado also extended her best wishes to emerging artists, hoping they find success and passion in their performances. While fans may miss her on stage, her legacy and influence in the music world remain firmly established, ensuring that her contributions will continue to resonate for years to come.
