URGENT UPDATE: The San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) is set to launch a groundbreaking Student Wellness Index at its Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, aimed at revolutionizing how student well-being is assessed. This initiative, developed in partnership with San Diego State University and the San Diego County Office of Education, seeks to tackle the pressing issue of chronic absenteeism.

At a time when student mental health is paramount, SDUSD Superintendent Fabi Bagula emphasized, “Students doing well physically, mentally, and emotionally are better equipped to excel in the classroom.” He added that the district is committed to providing essential support to students facing challenges in these areas, which are critical for learning and development.

The new index will encompass a variety of data points for a more comprehensive evaluation of student wellness. The framework is expected to be finalized in the upcoming months, with a pilot program aligning with schools involved in the Student Behavioral Health Incentive Program. These schools, including those in the Canyon Hills, Mira Mesa, Mission Bay, Morse, and San Diego clusters, will help establish a baseline of data by May 2026.

Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, SDUSD has prioritized student wellness by expanding on-site social, emotional, and mental health services. The district forecasts a 2.7% decline in chronic absenteeism, with improvements noted in student feelings of belonging and relationships with teachers, also increasing by 2.7%.

As SDUSD leads the way in prioritizing student wellness, officials are encouraging community involvement to help further these efforts. The upcoming meeting is anticipated to draw significant attention from parents and educators alike as the district outlines its innovative approach to enhancing student health and academic success.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Board of Education meeting approaches. This initiative represents a crucial step toward fostering a healthier learning environment in San Diego schools.
