The Denver Broncos hosted a workout for veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis on Tuesday, as the team seeks to bolster its roster following injuries to key players. Lewis, at 41 years old, arrived at Broncos Park amid a tightening tight end situation after the Broncos were unable to retain two of their players, Brendan Bates and Ben Sims, who were claimed by the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings, respectively.
Lewis, who was drafted as the 28th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, has had a remarkable career. He holds the record for the most career appearances by a tight end in NFL history, a testament to his durability and longevity in the league. Throughout his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Green Bay Packers, and Chicago Bears, Lewis has recorded 437 receptions for 5,115 yards and 40 touchdowns. Known for his exceptional blocking skills, he is a dual threat on the field, contributing both in the passing game and as a formidable blocker.
Last season, Lewis made four starts for the Bears and has only missed one game over the past eight seasons, highlighting his fitness and reliability. While no contract details have been reported yet, the Broncos may be considering signing Lewis, particularly after their recent roster changes. On the same day, the team released quarterback Sam Ehlinger from the active roster, in addition to cutting outside linebacker Garrett Nelson and wide receiver Samori Toure from the practice squad.
In the wake of injuries to tight ends Lucas Krull and Nate Adkins, the Broncos find themselves in need of additional depth at the position. Krull is expected to miss approximately eight weeks following foot surgery, while Adkins suffered a knee injury during a recent game against the Dallas Cowboys. The Broncos already have two tight ends, Caleb Lohner and Patrick Murtagh, on their practice squad, but the team is looking for more experienced options as they prepare for the upcoming challenges.
Denver’s depth chart remains solid with Evan Engram and Adam Trautman leading the tight end group, but the injuries have prompted the team to explore the tight end market ahead of the November 4, 2024, NFL trade deadline. Reports suggest that the Broncos might also be considering acquiring TJ Hockenson from the Vikings, though this remains unconfirmed.
As the Broncos navigate these roster adjustments, the potential addition of a seasoned player like Lewis could provide critical experience and stability to the team’s tight end position.
