Humane Society Launches Urgent Adoption Drive with New Catio

BREAKING: The Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB) has just unveiled an exciting new outdoor space—a “catio” designed to enhance the lives of adoptable cats. This innovative structure allows shelter felines to bask in the sunshine and breathe fresh air while remaining safe, promoting both their health and socialization.

Located in Vallejo, California, the Ila Emerson Memorial Catio features wrap-around enclosed netting and multi-level platforms for the cats to perch and relax. This vital addition, completed in just seven weeks, includes cat trees, sensory toys, and cozy bedding, thanks to generous donations from local businesses and community members.

HSNB Director Carol Stillson emphasized the importance of this space, stating, “Before, cats were confined to small indoor rooms. Now, they can experience a taste of nature.” The catio will significantly improve the cats’ quality of life and increase their chances of adoption by providing a healthy environment for interaction with potential adopters.

Starting November 1, 2023, HSNB will also kick off an urgent adoption special offering discounts on black and tuxedo cats. As Board President Joseph Hayden noted, these cats often face stigma during this time of year, leading to a pause in adoptions. To combat this, the shelter is offering $50 off for kitten adoption fees and $25 off for cats over six months. Additionally, adopting a pair of cats offers a $50 discount, making it easier for families to welcome two furry friends into their homes.

The shelter is proud of its low return rates and rigorous screening process for potential adopters. “We do our homework,” Hayden quipped, “because we want to ensure it’s in the best interest of the animal.”

With the opening of the Ila Emerson Memorial Catio, HSNB is set to transform the adoption experience. Scheduled meet-and-greets in this new space allow visitors to interact with the cats in an open environment, fostering play and bonding opportunities that could lead to successful adoptions.

Volunteer Tracy Manio expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “This space is incredible for the cats; it gives them a chance to socialize in a healthy way.”

As the shelter prepares for the upcoming adoption special, those interested in bringing a new feline companion home are encouraged to visit HSNB’s official website to learn how to schedule a visit. This development marks a new chapter for the Humane Society of the North Bay, aiming to increase adoptions and enhance the lives of both cats and their future families.
