Pistons Surge Past Mavericks in Mexico City Showdown

MEXICO CITY — The Detroit Pistons triumphed over the Dallas Mavericks 122-110 on November 4, 2023, showcasing a strong fourth-quarter performance to secure their second consecutive victory. Jalen Duren led the Pistons with a career-high 33 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds, while Cade Cunningham contributed 21 points and a remarkable 18 assists.

The game, held at the Arena Ciudad de México, marked the 15th regular-season matchup in Mexico City and the fourth for the Mavericks, who have played there more than any other franchise. The victory was crucial for the Pistons as they continue to build momentum in the season.

Pistons’ Strong Finish Seals Victory

Detroit’s Duren expressed his determination to contribute to the win, stating, “I just wanted to get the win. Coach had a great game plan and my teammates found me, and the rest is history.” His impressive performance, combined with contributions from Duncan Robinson (18 points) and Ausar Thompson (15 points), propelled the Pistons past the Mavericks.

Cunningham, who experienced a standout night with his 18 assists, reflected on his achievement, saying, “It is cool, super cool. The coaching staff put me in a great position, and my teammates helped me. To do it out here was cool.” He emphasized the importance of the win for the team’s growth and the representation of the Pistons organization.

Mavericks Struggle in Final Quarter

The Mavericks had a strong start and led 93-87 after three quarters. However, they faltered dramatically in the fourth, allowing the Pistons to outscore them 35-17. Mavericks guard Cooper Flagg, a native of Newport, contributed 16 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in the loss. The team was missing forward Anthony Davis, who is expected to be sidelined for two games due to a left leg injury sustained earlier in the week against Indiana.

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd acknowledged his team’s shortcomings in the paint, stating, “They dominated us in the paint. Give them credit; they were good in the fourth quarter. It is hard to win in this league. It is not an excuse; you have to play with the guys that you have.”

The Pistons will look to continue their winning streak when they face the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night, while the Mavericks prepare to take on the Houston Rockets on the same evening.
