NIU’s Electric Microcar Heads for Production—Launch Imminent!

UPDATE: The highly anticipated NIUMM electric microcar is officially moving toward production, with a commercial release on the horizon. This announcement comes after a recent display at EICMA 2025, the prestigious motorcycle show in Milan, where officials showcased its impressive features and capabilities.

The NIUMM is designed for urban commuters, sharing batteries with NIU’s popular NQi-series scooters, making it an attractive option for existing NIU scooter owners. With a range of approximately 70 km (43 miles) and a top speed of 45 km/h (28 mph), this compact vehicle is classified as an L6e quadricycle, allowing it to navigate dense city environments effortlessly.

NIU’s Director of International Operations, Sieghart Michielsen, confirmed that the microcar is currently completing its homologation testing—the final hurdle before it hits the market. This marks a significant step forward for NIU, as the demand for small, electric vehicles continues to surge across Europe.

These L6e quadricycles have captured a unique niche, appealing particularly to teenagers, city dwellers, and older adults seeking a simple alternative to traditional cars. With a maximum weight of 425 kg (excluding batteries), many users can drive them with just a moped license, highlighting their accessibility.

The NIUMM features two battery slots, with the option to carry an additional pair for extended range—an appealing feature for those needing more than the standard distance. This flexibility could be a game-changer for urban mobility.

Other models in the L6e category, like the Citroen Ami and the Renault Twizy, have demonstrated strong market demand for small, affordable electric vehicles. The Citroen Ami, with its €7,000 price tag, has gained a cult following, highlighting the potential for NIU to capture a similar audience.

As European cities increasingly embrace car-light futures, NIU stands poised to capitalize on this momentum. While specific pricing and availability details remain under wraps, the anticipation is building for the NIUMM’s launch.

Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting development as NIU gears up to bring their electric microcar to market. The future of urban commuting may be on the verge of a significant transformation, making the NIUMM a vehicle to watch in the coming months.
