Fort Lauderdale Mayor Attacked by Ex-Fiancée in Alleged Domestic Violence Incident

In a troubling incident of alleged domestic violence, Dean Trantalis, the 72-year-old Democratic mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, testified in court that he was attacked by his 34-year-old ex-fiancée, Daniel James Curran, last week. The altercation occurred on November 1, 2023, when Curran arrived at Trantalis’s home, leading to a confrontation that resulted in Curran’s arrest.

According to police reports, Curran allegedly pushed Trantalis during their encounter, prompting the mayor to fight back. The situation escalated when Curran reportedly dragged Trantalis approximately 15 feet across the road in front of his residence. Following the incident, Curran was charged with battery against a person aged 65 or older and for violating a protective order that Trantalis had secured in September.

During the court hearing, Trantalis recounted the events leading up to the altercation. Despite having a no-contact order in place, he opened his door to Curran, believing there might be a way to help him. “I thought maybe there was some way to rehabilitate Danny by trying to reconnect and hopefully steer him into counseling and mental health treatment, and I failed at that,” Trantalis stated.

The protective order was filed after Trantalis accused Curran of a series of violent behaviors, including throwing objects, brandishing knives, and making aggressive demands that Trantalis leave his home. These troubling claims paint a picture of a volatile relationship that has evidently deteriorated over time.

In light of the recent events, a Broward County judge set Curran’s bond at $6,000 and mandated that he refrain from any contact with Trantalis. Additionally, the judge prohibited Curran from possessing firearms, weapons, or ammunition.

Curran’s emotional response during the proceedings was evident as he expressed his feelings toward the mayor, stating, “No matter what. I always have and will love him.” This personal statement underscores the complexity of their relationship, which appears to be marred by both affection and conflict.

The incident has garnered attention within the LGBTQ+ community and highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence, particularly in relationships with significant age disparities. As the situation develops, it serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence and supporting those affected.

As legal proceedings continue, the broader implications of this case may resonate beyond Fort Lauderdale, prompting discussions about domestic violence awareness and prevention in various communities.
