A Massachusetts couple has defied conventional retirement norms by continuing to run their successful furniture company, Brigger by Klein Design, which they established nearly 50 years ago. At the age of 92, Gerhart Klein reflects on his journey from furniture creator to business owner with enthusiasm, proving that retirement can indeed be a time for reinvention rather than rest.
Gerhart Klein began crafting furniture in the mid-1970s, driven by a personal need for comfortable seating options that he could not find in local stores. “I was always afraid that sort of at mid-life you would lose your freedom to choose what you want to do,” he shared. This quest for comfort led him to develop chairs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, embodying what he describes as “formed for function” design.
In the mid-1980s, Klein transitioned to a dedicated manufacturing facility, where he continues to produce his Scandinavian-inspired chairs using locally sourced wood and fabrics. “I make comfortable chairs,” he stated succinctly, underscoring the philosophy that guides his work.
Klein’s journey into entrepreneurship did not mean abandoning his career in engineering. While establishing his furniture business, he worked as a chemical engineer for a local company that later transformed into the renowned battery manufacturer, Duracell. In 1985, he made the pivotal decision to fully commit to his furniture endeavor. “It’s an interesting challenge that is definitely what I like as my retirement job,” he remarked.
Partnership in Business and Life
Standing by his side for over 62 years is his wife, Brigitte Klein. The name of their company, Brigger, is a blend of their names, symbolizing their successful partnership both in life and business. “That’s why we’re still together, because I come up with something that could be improved. She’s quality control,” Gerhart noted, crediting Brigitte for much of their success.
The couple’s synergy is evident in their work. They recently relaunched their website, adapting to the growing trend of online sales, which now constitutes the majority of their business. Their commitment to their craft and each other showcases a remarkable blend of passion and partnership.
Despite their age, the Kleins show no inclination to slow down. Their dedication to their business reflects a philosophy that resonates with many: retirement does not have to equate to inactivity. Instead, it can be an opportunity for individuals to pursue their passions with vigor and creativity.
As they continue to thrive in their venture, Gerhart and Brigitte Klein exemplify a unique approach to life after work, reminding others that the journey is far from over. With their furniture business still flourishing, this dynamic couple serves as an inspiring testament to the possibilities that lie within pursuing one’s passions at any age.
