Kevin J. McAloon, a distinguished engineer and passionate outdoor enthusiast, passed away on September 16, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of John H. McAloon and Eileen A. O’Sullivan McAloon. His educational journey began at Notre Dame Academy in Watsonville, California, followed by St. Ignatius High School in Chicago.
After completing high school, McAloon dedicated two years to serving in the U.S. Army. He then pursued higher education, graduating from the University of Detroit with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and later earning a Master’s Degree in the same field from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
Career in Aerospace Engineering
McAloon had a notable career spanning over three decades in the aerospace industry. He worked for several prominent companies, including Douglas Aircraft, Northrop, and most significantly, TRW, where he dedicated 23 years before retiring in 1992. Following his retirement, he continued to contribute to the field by consulting part-time at TRW and Northrop Grumman for an additional nine years.
Beyond his professional achievements, McAloon was known for his adventurous spirit and love of outdoor activities. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, both on dirt and street bikes, taking memorable trips with his children across local and cross-country routes. His passion for fitness extended to running, completing four marathons—three of which he ran alongside his son—and numerous 10K races.
A Life of Adventure and Family
After transitioning from running, McAloon took up cycling, delighting in bike rides along the scenic routes of the Palos Verdes peninsula and later exploring the farm roads of the Sacramento Valley. His interest in farming technology grew during these rides, showcasing his ever-curious nature.
McAloon is survived by his four children, including Karen, and two grandchildren, Jack and Madeleine. He also leaves behind four nieces and nephews: Jack, Maureen, Jim, and Kathy.
In a heartfelt family tribute, they reflected on his life, stating, “He will be missed. His wit, his charm, his kindness, his deep love of salt, his Irish humour. May the wind always be at your back.” McAloon’s legacy will surely remain in the hearts of those who knew him, a testament to a life well-lived full of achievements, laughter, and love.
