Rocklin Triumphs Over Archbishop Mitty for First CIF NorCal Title

In a thrilling CIF NorCal Open Division championship match on November 18, 2025, at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Rocklin High School secured its first NorCal Open title, overcoming a fierce challenge from the Monarchs. Under the leadership of former Mitty coach Bret Almazan-Cezar, Rocklin rallied from a two sets to one deficit to clinch victory, winning the final two sets 25-21 and 15-10.

Rocklin, with a season record of 37-4, faced a formidable opponent in Archbishop Mitty, ranked seventh nationally and boasting a remarkable 33-4 record. The Monarchs had not lost a set in over a month, setting the stage for a highly competitive matchup. Rocklin’s early momentum was evident as they surged to a 9-3 lead in the first set. Despite Mitty’s efforts to stabilize, they dropped the first set 25-21.

Mitty rebounded in the following two sets, with standout performances from hitters Makenna Crosson and Chayce Courtney. The Monarchs dominated the second and third sets, winning both 25-16. This sequence seemed to establish a clear path to victory, but Rocklin’s determination shone through in the fourth set.

The Thunder regained control, leading 3-0 and maintaining their advantage to take the fourth set. Almazan-Cezar noted the importance of preparation, stating, “His kids did a really good job in their preparation.” His team’s physical play and strategic execution ultimately paid off.

In the decisive fifth set, Rocklin took an early 2-0 lead, never relinquishing it as they sealed the match with a powerful kill from middle blocker Rylee Heinz. This victory marked a significant milestone for Rocklin, as they achieved their first CIF NorCal title in school history.

Mitty’s new head coach, Jake Spain, reflected on the loss, acknowledging the challenges of facing a team that capitalized on their opportunities. “It makes it hard when you’re playing from behind against a good offensive team,” he remarked. Despite the disappointment, Spain expressed pride in his team’s efforts throughout the season.

The defeat ended Mitty’s hopes of breaking their recent trend of losses in CIF Open state championship games. Spain highlighted the contributions of his senior players, lamenting, “It’s heartbreaking. I love these seniors who give every fiber of their being to wanting to be champions.” He emphasized the potential for future success within the program, aiming to uphold the legacy established by Almazan-Cezar during his tenure.

Crosson, in her final high school match before heading to the University of Minnesota, finished with a game-high 25 kills. Meanwhile, Courtney added 22 kills, showcasing her potential as a key player for the Monarchs in the upcoming season.

As Rocklin celebrated their historic victory, the matchup served as a reminder of the competitive spirit and dedication present in high school volleyball. The Thunder’s triumph not only marks a new chapter for their program but also highlights the impact of strong leadership and cohesive teamwork in achieving success on the court.
